Health and Safety for Off-Site Visits

All schools and establishments must have a trained Educational Visits Co-ordinator in place and are advised to attend a refresher course every 3 years. We offer both refresher courses and additional courses to help educate local leaders in outdoor education and safety management. 

We cover the legal situation, risk assessment, supervision arrangements, insurance, parental consent, outdoor pursuit qualifications and lots more advice. 

Educational Visit Co-ordinators Training

Key objectives

  • Learn the national context and importance of outdoor education 
  • Risk management and risk assessment
  • Leader competence and supervision
  • Learn responsibilities and duties of a visit coordinator

This course follows the national framework for Educational Visit Leader training.

Educational Visit Co-ordinator Refresher Training

Key objectives

  • Guidance and policy updates
  • How to manage routine and non-routine events
  • Risk management procedures across a range of activities
  • Support in configuring operating procedures using EVOLVE
  • Scenario learning 

Visit Leader Training

Key objectives

  • recognising hazards
  • practical risk benefit assessment in the field
  • increased competency in risk assessing and risk management
  • knowledge and understanding of effective group supervision
  • presenting a balanced rational for offsite education
  • increased awareness of learning outside the classroom
  • an overview of national best practice
  • greater confidence and ability to act as a visit leader

This course is for colleagues who lead, or plan to lead, visits off site with groups of young people. 

Management of Visit Emergencies (MoVE)

Key objectives

  • learn how to manage off-site emergencies
  • designed for the senior leadership team in schools, academies, youth and other educational establishments
  • ensures your school emergency plans are aligned to manage an off-site visit emergency
  • the course has been developed as a result of lessons learned from a number of different emergency incidents over the last few years
  • this training might never be used but provides reassurance that if an event overwhelms a group on a visit there are procedures in place to support all those involved

Educational establishment or Trust specific courses

Key objectives

We can arrange closed course training courses for individual schools or Trusts which offers many benefits.

·       Cost per head on closed courses offers significant savings and value for money

·       Consistent training for staff leads to better outcomes for children & young people

·       Consistent training programs across a school or trust promotes better planning and saves time

·       Reduces the likelihood of incidents on school visits and therefore employer culpability.

·       Provides valuable and relevant CPD opportunities

·       Staff have direct access to the Outdoor Education Advisor on training courses, backed by phone and email support in supporting establishments in providing safe and high-quality outdoor learning experiences

·       Closed courses can be delivered either at our centre or your venue

·       Training courses available include Educational Visits Co-ordinator (EVC), Visit Leader (VL) and Management of Visit Emergencies (MoVE)

·       Refresher training courses can also be arranged.
