Travel Choice case study: Kimberley

Nottinghamshire County Council's Travel Choice scheme is helping provide personalised travel advice to hundreds of jobseekers, supporting them to overcome transport barriers to employment, training and education.

The Travel Choice team works with job seekers to find out how they currently travel to interviews and the transport obstacles they face.  Following these discussions, tailored travel advice is provided to raise awareness of transport options and practical services, such as free cycle confidence courses and cycle maintenance sessions, taster public transport tickets and low-cost bicycle and moped loans.

Kimberley was provided with funding to complete a CBT course – compulsory basic training for a riding a moped or a motorcycle - which she passed.  She was full of praise for the training centre and left a very positive review on their website to say how patient and knowledgeable the trainers were.

She was offered Personal Protective Equipment but wanted to buy this herself as she wanted pink leathers and helmet! The loan has given her a great deal of freedom and the flexibility to undertake additional shifts at work. She has also been able to visit family and friends in the neighbouring town.

Kimberley says:

“The moped has given me real freedom for the first time. I am able to get to work with ease. That has allowed me to actually work extra hours since I can get home so easily. I have been able to visit family members and it has changed my whole quality of life for the better.

“I live in Meden Vale, my workplace is Sports Direct warehouse in Shirebrook.

“I begin work at 6:45 and due to living in a village there are no buses available at that time and it is too far for me to cycle.”
